How it works

Work with fractions clearly

This Fractions Calculator performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using two fractions. It simplifies the result automatically and also shows decimal and mixed-number forms.

The calculator is useful for homework, recipe adjustments, construction measurements, classroom examples, and quick checks when working with fractional values.

Enter two fractions

Each fraction has a numerator on top and denominator on the bottom. The denominator cannot be zero because division by zero is undefined.

Choose an operation

Select addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. The calculator applies the correct fraction rule for that operation and then simplifies the final answer.

Simplify automatically

The result is reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor. This means answers like 4/8 are automatically shown as 1/2.

Compare result formats

The calculator displays the simplified fraction, improper fraction, mixed number, and decimal value so the answer can be used in different contexts.

Frequently asked questions

To add fractions, convert both fractions to a common denominator, add the numerators, and keep the common denominator. Then simplify the result. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Subtraction also requires a common denominator. Convert both fractions, subtract the second numerator from the first, and simplify. Negative answers are possible when the second fraction is larger.
Multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Then simplify. For example, 2/3 ร— 3/4 becomes 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2.
To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The reciprocal swaps the numerator and denominator. For example, 1/2 รท 1/4 becomes 1/2 ร— 4/1 = 2.
An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator, such as 7/4. It can also be written as a mixed number, such as 1 3/4.
A denominator represents the number of equal parts in a whole. Zero equal parts is not meaningful, and mathematically division by zero is undefined. The calculator blocks zero denominators for this reason.
