Work Hours, Breaks, and Weekly Pay Explained
A work hours calculator helps convert start time, end time, break time, and days worked into net paid hours. It is useful for employees, freelancers, shift workers, managers, payroll helpers, and anyone who needs to verify a weekly timesheet.
The calculator subtracts unpaid break time from the shift length and then multiplies the net daily hours by the number of workdays. If an hourly rate and overtime threshold are entered, it also estimates regular hours, overtime hours, and gross pay.
Work-hour rules can vary by employer, country, state, contract, and industry. This calculator gives a practical estimate, but payroll policies, rounding rules, paid breaks, and legal overtime rules should always be checked separately.
Shift length
The difference between start and end time gives the gross shift length. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as an overnight shift crossing midnight.
Break deduction
Unpaid breaks reduce net work time. Paid breaks may need to be entered as zero because they should not reduce paid hours in that case.
Weekly totals
Multiplying net daily hours by days worked gives a weekly or period total. This makes it easier to compare scheduled time with actual time worked.
Pay estimate
When hourly rate is entered, the calculator estimates regular pay and overtime pay using the threshold and multiplier, giving a quick view before formal payroll.
