Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate trip fuel use and cost from distance, vehicle efficiency, and fuel price.

km
Distance for one direction of the trip.
$/ L
Price you expect to pay per liter.
km/L
How many kilometers your vehicle travels per liter.
Enable this for a round trip with the same route.

Your real cost can change with traffic, terrain, weather, driving speed, cargo weight, tire pressure, vehicle condition, and local fuel prices.

How it works

Estimate the real cost of your trip

This Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a trip may require and what it may cost. Enter your route distance, vehicle efficiency, and current fuel price, then choose whether the journey includes a return trip.

You can calculate using either kilometers per liter or liters per 100 kilometers. Both formats describe fuel economy, but they work in opposite directions, so choose the one shown in your vehicle's dashboard or manual.

Enter the route distance

Use the one-way distance between your starting point and destination. If you will drive back along a similar route, turn on the round-trip option and the calculator doubles the distance for you.

Use your real fuel economy

The most useful figure is your typical real-world efficiency rather than the best value from an advertisement. City traffic, hills, weather, and vehicle load can all change consumption.

Add current fuel price

Fuel prices vary by station and location. Enter the approximate price per liter you expect to pay. A small price change can have a noticeable impact on long trips.

Compare trip scenarios

Try different distances, prices, and efficiencies to make a travel budget. This can help compare driving routes, plan car-pooling, or estimate the added cost of a weekend journey.

Frequently asked questions

First, the calculator determines fuel needed for your total distance. With km/L, fuel needed equals distance divided by efficiency. With L/100 km, fuel needed equals distance multiplied by consumption and divided by 100. It then multiplies liters needed by your fuel price.
Kilometers per liter measures how far you travel using one liter, so a higher number is more efficient. Liters per 100 km measures how much fuel you use over a fixed distance, so a lower number is more efficient. The calculator lets you switch between either format.
Enable the round-trip option when you expect to return along roughly the same distance. The calculator doubles the one-way distance before estimating fuel use and cost. Leave it off for a one-way move, delivery, or trip with a different return route.
Real fuel use can differ because of stop-and-go traffic, hills, air conditioning, temperature, passengers, cargo, tire pressure, driving speed, and the condition of your vehicle. Consider the result a budget estimate and add a margin for long or unfamiliar trips.
Yes. The calculation works for any vehicle that uses a liquid fuel as long as you enter distance, actual fuel economy, and price per liter. Hybrid vehicles may have fuel use that changes more between city and highway driving, so use a realistic blended efficiency.
